Social Message Sent at Farmer’s Market

Not only was it a Saturday at the Deerfield Farmers’ Market, it was an opportunity to learn about causes being promoted in the community.

The League of Women Voters was registering people to vote, and the Deerfield based U.S. Children’s Medical Assistance Fund, Inc. (USCMAF) was letting people know what it does.

The USCMAF was started approximately a year ago by Andrea Sterenstein, a Case Western Reserve University senior from Deerfield. Its aim is to improve the lives children from low to moderate income families who are denied care because of their circumstances, according to its mission statement.

While working at the county hospital in Cleveland while attending school, Sterenstein saw disadvantaged children living even more difficult lives because of physical ailments.

“They treat the emergency and send them home,” Sterenstein said. “They’ll (the hospital) do nothing for a clubbed foot or other deformities. They just send them home.”
