Award-Winning Author Jim Higley Talks Parenting in the Vanilla Moments of Life

Award-winning author, the "Bobblehead Dad," talks parenting in life's vanilla moments at a special Deerfield High School appearance on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

“The Bobblehead Dad” Appears Tuesday, February 12 at Deerfield High School

Teachable moments can be big and dramatic—a parent contracts a life-threatening illness, a friend goes into drug rehab. They can also be smaller but equally meaningful—a sports hero admits to doping, missed soccer practices lead to a missed starter spot. It’s award-winning author Jim Higley’s contention that those smaller, ‘vanilla’ moments contain much more value than parents realize. Connecting with kids in the humdrum of daily life is at the core of becoming an available parent: “Be available for your kids 24/7--physically, emotionally and spiritually. It pays off, trust me,” he says.

What else can Deerfield parents learn from this single dad, radio host, star blogger, author and cancer warrior? Plenty, as they’ll find out when the “Bobblehead Dad” makes a special appearance this February as part of the Deerfield Parent Network series. Through his own personal journey of raising three kids as a solo parent, he shares rich nuggets of wisdom he’s learned from the nooks and cranny moments. Dads and moms will walk away from the talk with practical tools to improve communications with their kids, as well as a deeper connection to their own life, promises Higley.

Today, Jim is known as a thoughtful, relatable voice to people worldwide who enjoy his stories in the Huffington Post, his video reports for NBC Universal iVillage as well as his weekly radio show, Bobblehead Dad. Jim’s a finalist in the 2012 Erma Bombeck Global Writing Competition, an insightful storyteller and motivational speaker who helps millions find meaning in the simple moments of their days. Bobblehead Dad: 25 Life Lessons I Forgot I Knew, is an inspirational story, a winning finalist of an International Book Award, a 2011 ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year finalist, and is ranked as a “Top Ten” Motivational book by Amazon Kindle. To top it all off, Jim is also the inaugural World’s Greatest Dad for Man of the House magazine. His kids, however, are requesting a recount!
