BASKETBALL SCRIMMAGE REPRESENTS BEST OF HOLY CROSS AS SCHOOL CELEBRATES 75TH YEAR

A recent basketball scrimmage held at Holy Cross school represents the best qualities of a school that now celebrates its 75th year in the Deerfield community.

Sometimes, basketball is about much more than the game.

Basketball teams from St. Malachy School in Chicago recently visited Holy Cross School in Deerfield to continue a new tradition for the two Catholic sister schools: the fourth annual winter basketball scrimmage. The schools have had a sister school relationship for more than 20 years.

Hosted by the Holy Cross Boosters Club, the recent event brought 5th through 8th graders to Deerfield for a day of competitive basketball and camaraderie.

Parents and supporters from both schools filled the stands, including St. Malachy Principal Bridgid Miller, Holy Cross Pastor Vince Costello, and Friends of St. Malachy volunteer and tutor Joanie Rosen.

Malik Adams, a St. Malachy 8th grader, was looking forward to competitive play between the 8th grade boys teams, with Holy Cross 6-0 on the season, and St. Malachy at 5-0, as well as the chance to have a good time.

“It’s fun to watch the teams play and make some new friends,” he said.

Holy Cross has always been proud of the strength of its sports programs, but, like its sister school, more so about the qualities that make its students successful both on and off the courts.

Adams, for example, is one of several St. Malachy students who have received four-year scholarships to various Catholic high schools. Those scholarships are based on academic merit and financial need.

Meantime, Holy Cross students consistently excel in the academic arena, with two former students scoring perfect ACT scores of 36 within the last 5 years. The school has been commended by the archdiocese for excellence in technology.

Holy Cross has been proud to serve the St. Malachy community over the years, including bringing together students whose paths might otherwise never meet. Students at both schools, meantime, thrive upon a dedication to faith, academics and community.

Holy Cross School is currently accepting registration for the 2013-2014 school year. Please call Katie Anderson at (847)945-0135 for more information. The school warmly welcomes students from other faith traditions to our school and community.

Upcoming 75th anniversary events include an open house and pancake breakfast on Sunday, Jan. 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; a second open house on Thursday, Jan. 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; and a third on Wednesday, March 13, at 7:00 p.m.
