Joint Funeral Service Set for 3 Brothers Who Died in Drowning, Shooting

The first drowned in a Deerfield pond and the other two died in an apparent murder-suicide as the family gathered to mourn the first brother.

It seems inconceivable that a family would have to hold a funeral for three brothers at the same time. Even more so if one of those brothers killed another. But that’s what the Grundei family will do in August.

Brian, Robert and Mark Grundei all died in the past three weeks.

Brian, 45, died May 16 when he drowned in a Deerfield pond in his subdivision. Robert, 47, died May 26 after police say he was shot by Mark, 50, who was hospitalized that day with what the coroner says is likely a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He died from the injury Wednesday.

Robert and Mark had gathered at the family home in Huntley to mourn Brian when the shooting occurred, police said. Their mother, 81-year-old Alyce Grundei, was grazed by a bullet while trying to break up the fight.

Their joint funeral will be held Aug. 2 at Holy Cross Church in Deerfield, according to a notice on the Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home website.
