Robert “Bob” Matthews Dies

Retired navy captain called Deerfield home.

Robert S. “Bob” Matthews, 74, of Deerfield, a retired United States Navy captain and 39-year employee of Bell & Howell, died August 7, according to information provided by N.H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home in Glenview.

Matthews “left the world with what he brought to the world-a gentle, caring kindness, wit and wisdom, deep blue eyes that could talk for him-even at the end. There is not a better friend, dad, grandpa, uncle, brother, son, colleague, or patient,” according to the notice published by the funeral home.

He is survived by daughters Leigh (Jack) Casino and Kristin Matthews. He was the grandfather of Kyle and Matthew Nixon, Beth Vilona and Michael Matthews. He was a companion to Jennifer Black, Nathan, Henry, and Eli Besser and friend of Jane Matthews and Jim Booth.

Matthews was preceded in death by his sister, Mabel Schrack, and his parents, Stephen Matthews and Della Pindur-Filgut.

A memorial service is planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made be made in Matthews name to the Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe 60022.
