Patch Talker: Readers Respond to State Requiring New Vaccinations for Students

Do you think the State of Illinois should require students to receive the Tdap booster shot in order to remain in school?

When the Illinois State Board of Health recently approved new recommendations requiring all sixth through twelfth grade students to have an additional vaccination, the Tdap booster shot, Patch asked readers to weigh in.

Do you think the state of Illinois should be telling us how to vaccinate our children? Do you think it’s fair that those who refuse vaccinations will not be allowed to attend school?

Here are some of the responses we received:

"Vaccinations do not make people incapable of fighting disease. Please link to one credible study that supports that conclusion."

"Vaccinations train the immune system to respond appropriately to disease. What makes you think that they somehow impede the immune system? If a child is NOT vaccinated, they CAN get the disease and pass it on to others. If they are vaccinated, then the chances are good that they WON'T get the disease and by extension, they won't pass it on to others. Sometimes if they're vaccinated, they might get some form of the disease, but it's typically weaker."

"Please tell my 19 year old son who was given the varivax as a child and now has a painful case of shingles that his childhood immunization protected him from getting shingles. I think he will be hard to convince."

"What happened to basic human rights? Every parent should refuse! The vaccinated kids are sick and shedding virus! Go figure, drug companies are looking for revenue. Look to see who's funding these politicians! Say no!"
