Armed Chase Ends Without Incident

Deerfield police officer forced to draw gun in pursuit of alleged offender.

An armed chase by Deerfield Police Officer Walt Trilhaase March 22 ended without serious incident and the arrest of Cody Haugabook, 21, of Chicago, for unlawful possession of a hand gun and resisting arrest, according to .

As Trilhaase was about to take Haugabook into custody on an outstanding drug warrant from Cook County, Haugabook ran and Trilhaase gave chase. While the alleged offender was running, Trilhaase saw him remove a dark object from his pocket, according to the report.

‘I pulled my duty weapon and told him to stop,” Trilhaase said in the report. “He threw the dark object over the fence and continued to run. I ordered him to stop and he finally stopped.”

After Trilhaase secured Haugabook in hand cuffs, he asked the alleged offender what was thrown over the fence and Haugabook said “nothing,” according to the report.

It was not until Trilhaase and Officer Anthony Kropp had Haugabook secure that Detective Marci Landy was able to go into the yard where Trilhaase allegedly saw Haugabook throw the dark object that she found a revolver.

According to the report, the incident began when Trilhaase observed Haugabook allegedly soliciting a resident in a home in the vicinity of Central and Indian Hill. When the resident closed the door and Haugabook came to the sidewalk, Trilhaase asked to see identification.

While Trilhaase was awaiting a records search from the Deerfield Police Department, Haugabook got his boss on the phone and Trilhaase was satisfied Haugabook was properly conducting business in Deerfield.

According to the report, moments later Trilhaase was informed about the outstanding Cook County warrant and told Haugabook he was being placed under arrest. As Trilhaase was getting ready to place handcuffs on the alleged offender, he asked to lay his clip board down. Instead of placing the clipboard on the ground, Haugabook started to run, according to the report.

Haugabook was held in the Deerfield Police lockup March 23 and transported to the Lake County Jail the next day. Patch is still trying to determine whether Haugabook remains in Lake County Jail, is in Cook County jail or is free on bond.
