Car Damage Leads to DUI, Drug Arrest

The following arrest information was supplied by the Deerfield Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Samuel Kim, 24, of Wheeling was arrested May 1 for DUI drugs, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with one headlight, according to Deerfield Police reports. 

Police spotted Kim driving in the vicinity of Lake Cook Road and Corporate Drive with only one headlight illuminated and “extensive front end damage which appeared to be fresh,” according to the report. After stopping him, police observed his “reactions seemed low” and the “heavy masking odor of air freshener was coming from the vehicle.”

After further investigation, police learned Kim had three arrests for charges including drugs, liquor and theft, according to the report. Police discovered green flakes which appeared to be Cannabis and observed he was “unsure of his balance” exiting the vehicle. He failed field sobriety tests. He was released on bond and will appear in Lake County Court at 9 a.m. May 29 in Waukegan.

Karen Prater Jasmine, 43, of Raleigh, NC, was arrested April 27 for driving with a suspended license and speeding, according to Deerfield reports. Police clocked her driving 58 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour construction zone on Lake Cook Road near Ellendale. Further investigation revealed her license was suspended. She was released on bond and will appear in Lake County Court at 3:30 p.m. June 4 in Park City. 

Eliza Bernal, 33, of Northbrook was arrested April 26 for driving while license suspended, using a hand held cellular telephone in a construction zone and an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court for driving with a suspended license, according to Deerfield Police reports. Police discovered the suspended license and outstanding warrant after stopping her for using the cell phone. She was released on bond and will appear in Lake County Court at 3:30 p.m. May 21 in Park City.
