Convicted Murderer Daniel Baker Gets 47 Years

Defense attorneys for the former Deerfield man who bludgeoned his girlfriend's mother to death with a baseball bat in April 2010, will appeal the sentence.

Deemed mentally fit to understand the sentence he would receive for the April 2010 murder of his then-girlfriend's mother, Daniel Baker, formerly of Deerfield, was given 47 years imprisonment Monday, reported the Chicago Tribune.

Baker was convicted last November of using a baseball bat to bludgeon to death 50-year-old Marina Aksman, of Vernon Hills, after she encouraged her daughter, Kristina, to break up with him.

After the murder, the couple fled to Montana, where Baker was arrested and confessed what he had done to investigators, reported the Daily Herald.

At his November 2012 bench trial, Judge Daniel Shanes ruled Baker was mentally ill and did not act with premeditation when killing Marina Aksman, but that he understood what he was doing, reported Patch.

At Monday's sentencing, Baker disrupted the proceedings several times, reported the Lake County News-Sun. He also interrupted his victim's other daughter as she was making her impact statement.

Judge Shanes recommend Baker be placed in a facility that can provide psychiatric care. He is expected to serve 100 percent of his 47-year sentence, minus the three years he already served, reported the Tribune.

Baker's defense will appeal the sentence. Baker is expected to return to court May 17 for a hearing, according to the News-Sun.
