A Deerfield landlord faces up to five years in prison for failing to return his tenants’ security deposit.
Police arrested Kenneth Neiman, 46, of Deerfield, Sept. 30 for theft by deception, a Class 3 Felony, according to a release from the Deerfield Police Department.
During a two-month investigation, police learned Neiman collected money in the form of security deposits from tenants at a home he was renting in the 900 block of Hemlock Street, according to the release. He then refused to return the money, claiming the property was damaged.
As police took a closer look, they concluded the damage existed before the tenants moved in, according to the release. Police took the evidence to the Lake County State’s Attorney and a warrant was issued for Neiman’s arrest the week of Sept. 23.
Neiman was involved in a traffic accident Sept. 30 and was taken into custody under the warrant, according to the release. He was transported to the Deerfield Police station and later released after posting a $5,000 cash bond.
Neiman will appear in Lake County Court at 9 a.m. Oct. 24 in Waukegan for a status hearing. If convicted, he could face between two and five years in prison.
