Deerfield resident Eric Unger, an openly gay student at Illinois State University, claims he was the victim of a hate crime after he was attacked walking home from a party early Saturday morning in Normal, according to a report in the Chicago Sun Times.
Normal police are investigating the attack and did not indicate whether or not it is a hate crime, according to the report.
Unger said he was walking home from a party around 2:30 a.m. Saturday when he passed a group of men. After walking by them, one knocked his cell phone from his hand. Unger complained and was attacked, according to the story.
Unger has a broken jaw and teeth. He is recovering from his injury.
