Deerfield, That Smoke in Your Basement May Not Be Cause for Alarm

The village is doing smoke testing this week. As always, call 911 in case of emergency.

Deerfield is currently conducting smoke testing throughout town, which means you may see smoke where you normally wouldn’t expect — or want — it to be.

“There is a distinct possibility you may see a white smoke coming from your basement or the sewer drains outside on your street,” the fire department wrote on its Facebook page.

Smoke testing is done on sewer systems to identify places where there are unintended openings, which allow the smoke to escape.
