Driver Denies Knowing Cocaine Was in Pocket

Police discover small drug cache on motorist after traffic violation stop.

Police spotted a car speeding east on Deerfield Road around midnight on Aug. 3 and pulled the vehicle over. Its rear registration lights also were not working.

While checking 42-year-old Stephen Russo's information, police discovered an active warrant was out for the Chicago man's arrest in Florida but that it was non-extraditable.

While searching Russo's car, officials found a pill bottle containing two bags of a green leafy substance that later tested positive for cannabis. Russo first told police that he had a "prescription" for it but later claimed he didn't realize it was in his car.

According to the police report, "Russo denied knowing where the white powdery substance came from, even though it came out of his own pocket."

Russo was arrested at the scene and slapped with drug charges back at the Deerfield Police Department. He was transported to the Lake County courthouse for a hearing on Aug. 4. His bond was set at $10,000, and he has a second court hearing on Aug. 30.
