Fire Injures Two, One Critically in Highland Park

Thermal imaging technology used to rescue critically injured person from house.

One person is in critical condition and another is stable at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood after they were injured earlier today in a house fire on the 500 block of Glenview Avenue in Highland Park.

All but one of the home’s residents were outside the building when the Highland Park Fire Department arrived shortly after 4:25 a.m., according to a news release from the City of Highland Park.

Firefighters used thermal imaging technology to locate the remaining victim who was found unconscious in the basement, according to the release. That person, who is in critical condition with third degrees on the upper portion of his body, was initially taken to Highland Park Hospital and then transferred to Loyola, according to a spokesperson for the fire department. He also suffered severe smoke inhalation, according to the release.

The second victim, who escaped the home by the time firefighters arrived, also suffered smoke inhalation. He too was taken to Highland Park Hospital and then transferred to Loyola.

“Our fire crews on the scene performed monumentally in this quick response fire call,” Highland Park Fire Chief Patrick Tanner said. “With the help of thermal imaging, we were able to evacuate the victim from the smoke filled home as quickly as possible and transport the individual to the hospital immediately to receive urgent care.”
