Has Deerfield's Stop Sign Obedience Changed?

What is legal behavior at a stop sign?

From the video Patch took today at the intersection of Kenton Road and Margate Terrace one might think all a driver must do is slow enough at a stop sign to look both ways and proceed safely.

That is not the answer Patch got from the Deerfield Police Department. As far as the Deerfield Police Department is concerned, slowing but not stopping could get a driver a ticket. “The Illinois Vehicle code is clear,” a police spokesperson said. “There must be a clear cessation of vehicular movement.”

Last week Patch spent 15 minutes at the corner of Longfellow and Hermitage Avenues after a person suggested that spot was a lawless intersection on Facebook. Today a Patch cameraman was at Kenton Road and Margate Terrace for 15 minutes.

During those spans, plenty of vehicles and some bicycles had to deal with one of the stop signs at the intersections. How many came to a full stop? How many made what many call a rolling stop—slowing down, even to a crawl, but not actually stopping
