Identity Theft

On Oct. 17 at about 12:55 p.m., police were dispatched after receiving a call about a possible identity theft.

According to the police report, a 45-year-old male victim stated that someone had charged $610.53 to his debit card without his authorization, despite the fact he still had the card in his possession.

As the investigation ensued, police were informed through a telephone call from Kaplan Learning Centers that there was a package they had in their possession waiting to be shipped, which had a shipping address located in Conley, Georgia, while the billing address was listed as Deerfield.

After becoming suspicious, Kaplan Learning Centers officials contacted the Deerfield Police Dept.

The $610.53 of items, which the report stated were legos, were charged to the victim's card. The charges on his card were later removed, and the items weren't shipped, the report said.

Additionally, the cell phone number used to place the order was believed to be an inexpensive type of disposable phone, according to police.

Police informed the victim that he should obtain a free credit report he is entitled to by law annually to make sure there were no other items wrongly purchased under his name.
