Police Blotter: 3 DUI and 2 Drug Arrests

A hit-and-run accident is among the calls that resulted in charges.

Hit and Run: 

 responded to a hit-and-run incident near the corner of Techny and Shermer roads on Sept 5. Northbrook police, who were already at the scene when Deerfield officers arrived, had stopped the vehicle.

During questioning, authorities said 20-year-old Cristina Paz smelled of burned cannabis. During a search of the Chicago resident’s car, police discovered marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside.

Paz was charged with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and improper lane usage. She’s due in court on Oct. 5.

Drunk Driving:

Ben Boris Schwartz, 59, of Highland Park, was charged with driving under the influence on Sept. 3. According to police, Schwartz was spotted speeding and weaving through traffic near Waukegan and Lake Cook roads.

During questioning, officers said Schwartz smelled of alcohol and admitted to having “one shot maybe.” After failing a field sobriety test, Schwartz was arrested and charged. His court date is scheduled for Sept. 28.

Jason Ferrigan, 37, of Deerfield, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence Sept. 9. Police said they spotted Ferrigan circling a Walgreen's parking lot. During questioning, Ferrigan told officers he was lost. However, after failing a field sobriety test during which he registered a blood alcohol content level of .076, he was taken into custody.

Drug Arrests: 

Andrew McGrath, 25, of Highland Park, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia on Sept. 8. Police had pulled over McGrath's vehicle near Lake Cook and Carlile roads over an unlit headlight. During a search of McGrath’s vehicle, police discovered a glass pipe, two grinders and a digital scale inside.

Alexander Smit, 24, of Chicago, was also arrested and charged with possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia on Sept. 8. Smit's vehicle was pulled over by police near Waukegan and Lake Cook roads for having an expired license plate sticker. During questioning, police said they smelled cannabis on Smit and found 4.2 grams of marijuana inside his vehicle as well as a smoking pipe.

Theft:  

On Sept. 8, a man reported $1,000 stolen from his wallet that was inside a gym bag secured in the locker room at in Deerfield. The victim said he did not notice the cash missing until he was driving on the tollway. No other items were reported stolen from the locker.
