Police Blotter: Broken Taillight Leads to Drug Bust

Possession of Marijuana 

Mitchell D. Willins, 53, of Highland Park was arrested by Dec. 21 for possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia after the car he was driving was stopped because of a broken taillight, according to Deerfield Police reports. 

Willins was driving northbound on Waukegan Road near the intersection of Osterman when he was stopped because one of his taillights was broken. Police allegedly smelled marijuana, asked Willins if he had any and Willins handed the officer a bag of “green leafy substance,” according to the report.

After searching the car, police also found a glass smoking pipe and gave Willins a field sobriety test. Willins passed the test, according to the report. 

He was also cited for the vehicle violation.

Willins was released on $120 bond and will appear in Lake County Criminal Court at 9 a.m. Jan. 5 in Park City. 

DUI 

Thomas Cunniff, 54, of Deerfield was arrested for driving under the influence Dec. 20 after Deerfield Police stopped the car he was driving near the intersection of Deerfield and Castlewood Roads, according to Deerfield Police reports. 

After Cunniff failed a field sobriety test, he gave police permission to search the car where they allegedly found a gym bag with prescription Diazepam with Cunniff’s name on it, according to the report. A message on the bottle allegedly said the medicine could cause drowsiness. 

Cunniff was released on $300 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Lake County Criminal Court at 9 a.m. Jan. 11 in Waukegan. 

Retain Theft 

Tashana Williams, 23, of Chicago was arrested for retail theft by Deerfield Police Dec. 19 when she allegedly tried to return merchandise to Bed, Bath and Beyond in Deerfield she pulled from the store’s shelves, according to Deerfield Police reports. 

After Williams was allegedly observed taking the merchandise from the store shelves by Bed, Bath and Beyond personnel, she allegedly presented a receipt from the company’s Darien outlet, according to the report. She allegedly entered the store without any merchandise according to store video. 

Police later found unwrapped fragrance with security stickers from Ulta, another store at Deerbrook Mall, in Williams’ car, according to the report. Police entered Ulta, the security stickers set off the alarm and charges were added for theft from Ulta, according to the report. 

Williams was released on $120 bond. She will appear in Lake County Criminal Court at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 19 in Park City.
