Police Blotter: Cars Keyed & Store Sells Tobacco to Minors

The following incidents were reported by the Deerfield Police Department between Feb. 26 and March 5.

Property Damage:

Police were called to a residence on Princeton Lane March 1 in response to a report of criminal damage to property. The homeowners told officers back on the night of Feb. 26 their dog started to bark at someone outside and they spotted an unknown vehicle pulling out of the driveway. The residents later discovered two of their cars keyed all the way around the vehicles.  

On March 3 officers responded to Fountain View Drive in response to a property damage report. The president of the Fountain Association informed police that three stop signs at Fountain View and Island Court had been damaged. A “Stop and Smell the Roses” sign was also damaged. The president told officers the signs, valued at $800, had already been replaced.

Robbery:

Police responded to on Feb. 27 in response to a retail theft. An employee told officers he spotted 53-year-old Bernadette Robert in the frozen food section placing groceries inside shopping bags. The employee says the Highland Park woman walked out of the store without paying for the items which is when she was apprehended. The groceries were valued at $67.31. Her court date has been set for March. 17.

Two days later officers responded to Whole Foods again. An employee said he caught 69-year-old Patricia Kessner, of Deerfield, hiding groceries, valued at $57.28 in her handbag.  

Illegal Tobacco Sale:

On Feb. 26 the Deerfield Police Department conducted a tobacco compliance check at nine locations in the village, using a 17-year-old as a special agent. Authorities say when the teen asked for a pack of Newport 100 cigarettes at the employee Yonatan Wondimu asked for her license. Police say after checking the license Wondimu sold the cigarettes to the minor. When confronted by police, the clerk said he didn’t correctly read the driver’s license. Wondimu was charged with selling tobacco to a minor, his court date is set for March 17.  

Drunk Driving:

On Feb. 27 police stopped a Mercedes traveling on Lake Cook Road. Authorities say they watched the vehicle drive over the raised median. Police say 58-year-old Miroslav Terzic failed a sobriety test and was charged with a DUI. The Deerfield resident’s court date is set for March. 16. 

Police spotted a Ford driving erratically on Lake Cook Road at 1:47 a.m. on March 5. Officers say the car’s brights were also on. When the car stopped on the south side of PNC Bank they approached the vehicle and asked Jennifer Willaims what she was doing. Authorities say she answered with slurred words. The 33-year-old Deerfield resident was charged with failure to dim her headlights, driving with her license suspended and a DUI. Her court date has been set for April 6.
