Police Blotter: Cocaine Possession, Failure to Appear

Possession of controlled substance, other charges 

Beth Demas of Morton Grove was arrested Jan. 11 by for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended and operating an uninsured motor vehicle, according to Deerfield Police reports. 

Police spotted Demas driving an orange Chevrolet Aveo in the vicinity of Lake Cook and Wilmot Roads, made a routine check of the license plates and determined her license was suspended and she had no insurance, according to the report.

After stopping the car, police searched the vehicle and allegedly found multiple pills in “assorted baggies,” a bottle with white powder and a spoon, according to the report. Residue on the spoon rested positive for cocaine. 

According to the report, police contacted the Lake County State’s Attorney’s office. After consultation, Demas was taken to Lake County bond court where the judge set bond in the amount of $50,000, according to the report.

Demas is now free on bond, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. She next appears in Lake County Criminal Court at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 6. 

Failure to appear in court 

Mark Soderberg, 31, of Zion was arrested by Deerfield Police Jan. 12 on a warrant for failing to appear in court, according to Deerfield Police reports. 

Police saw a black Toyota Camry near the intersection of Lake Cook Road and Pine Street, made a routine check of the license plates and determined Soderberg was the likely driver, according to the report. 

According to the report, police determined the driver was in fact Soderberg, who was free on $20,000 bond for an alleged reckless driving charge and failed to appear at his last scheduled court appearance. 

Soderberg told police he did not have sufficient money with him to satisfy the $2,000 cash requirement of the bond, according to the report. Deerfield Police took Soderberg to Lake County Bond Court where the judge increased the amount of the bond to $50,000. He has since posted the necessary amount, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
