Police Blotter: Officers Arrest Two for Drunk Driving

The following incidents were reported by the Deerfield Police Department.

Drunk Driving: 

Jose Tellez-Cuevas, 44, of Highwood, was charged on June 16 with a DUI. Police say Tellez-Cuevas was spotted driving in the curb lane on Waukegan Road and was pulled over. Authorities say his ID card from Mexico was not a valid drivers license. After failing a field sobriety test, Tellez-Cuevas was charged with improper lane usage, no valid drivers license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and DUI. His court date is scheduled for July 13.

While responding to another radio call, a Deerfield police officer activated his emergency lights. In route to the location, he spotted a car traveling in the center lane. According to the police report, the officer had to blow his air horn three times before the driver yielded to his vehicle while continuing to swerve in and out of lanes. After being waved off the other call, the officer pulled the black Kia over. Jesus Chavarria-Garcia, 56, of Round Lake Park, was arrested for a DUI after failing a field sobriety test and blowing a .178 during a breathalyzer exam. His court date is scheduled for July 13. 

Damage to Property:

Police responded to the 400 block of Kelburn on June 19 in response to a complaint of criminal damage to property. When officers arrived the 76-year-old homeowner told them her patio door screen had been cut near the area where a handle would normally be located. The estimated damage was $50. It appeared nothing else had been taken from the home. 

Retail Theft:

Officers were dispatched to on June 19 in response to a retail theft report. An employee told police he watched 40-year-old Zenoviu Birtar take food items and walk out of the store without paying for them. The items were valued at $217.32. Birtar, a Romanian citizen was arrested for retail theft and the Romanian consulate was notified. His court date has been scheduled for July 21.
