Update: Osterman Suspect Turned Self In

Hughes surrendered at Police Station after warrant issued.

(Updated at 9:30 a.m., Jan. 27) The Deerfield man arrested for intent to manufacture a controlled substance at 1033 Osterman Avenue voluntarily surrendered to Deerfield Police Thursday after learning an arrest warrant was issued, according to Deputy Chief Tom Keane.

Steven Hughes came to the station Thursday, was processed and posted the cash portion of a $10,000 bond, according to Keane. He was then released on bail.

Keane also said Hughes was allegedly the person injured in the explosion and fire Jan. 2 at the Osterman Avenue house.

(Earlier on Jan. 26) A Deerfield man was arrested today for intent to manufacture Dimethyltrptamine (DMT), a controlled substance, according to a news release from the .

Steven Hughes, 47, of Deerfield was charged with two felonies from the events. Hughes is a tenant at the property, according to the release.

DMT is a psychedelic hallucinogenic drug which is found in nature but can also be manufactured, according to the website of the United States Drug Enforcement Agency.

During the investigation surrounding the fire, police found items that could be consistent with the manufacture of “home remedy/herbal” medicinal cures that may have played a role in the fire, according to the release. .

Hughes was charged with allegedly intending to manufacture DMT, a Class 3 felony, and use of a dangerous place for commission of a controlled substance offense, a Class 1 felony, according to the release. The charges carry a possible sentence of 15 years in jail and $25,000 in fines.

When police and members of the responded to the explosion and fire Jan. 2, they found a victim with burns who was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

At this time it is not known if that victim was Hughes. He was processed and released after posting bond, according to the release. He is scheduled to appear in Lake County Criminal Court at 9 a.m. Feb. 15 in Waukegan.
