Police Offer Free Gun Locks to Residents

Department joins Project ChildSafe to promote firearm safety.

If you’ve got a gun in your home, the wants you to lock it up.

Police Officer Oliver Cachole is the driving force behind the department’s decision to join Project ChildSafe, a campaign that offers free gun locks to Deerfield residents.

“I try and do more for the community,” the Iraq veteran said which is why he encouraged his superiors to become a member of the nationwide program that’s sponsored by the Department of Justice.

Cachole said he knows a child that was once seriously injured by an unlocked gun and wants to stop that from happening in this community.

“If I can prevent that one incident in Deerfield, I’m happy,” he said.

Interested residents are being asked to show up to the police department and request a ChildSafe safety kit, which will include a cable-style gun locking device, lock installment instructions and a safety booklet.

Cachole said locks have already been distributed to more than 25 residents. However, the department currently has hundreds more in stock.
