DHS Remains Mum on Burglary Suspects

Joseph Mahoney and Josh Norris were charged with one count each of home invasion, residential burglary and possession of a stolen firearm, according to the Highland Park Police Department.

officials know about the events because of an Illinois law requiring reciprocal reporting between schools and law enforcement agencies of these kinds of activities.

Township High School District 113 Communications Director Natalie Kaplan would not comment on whether any action has been taken, but acknowledged the law requiring the police to inform the school about the charges.

“At this time, the investigation is ongoing and we are waiting for more information,” Kaplan said. “District 113 has a reciprocal reporting agreement with the police department and will remain updated on the situation from them.”

Despite the fact Mahoney and Norris, both 17, were charged as adults by the authorities, the school continues to follow its own privacy rules. “We are not going to comment on individual students because of confidentiality laws,” Kaplan said.

Kaplan declined to comment when asked if any proceedings had been started or if either teen could be removed from the student body as a result of the arrest.

Though school does not start until Aug. 22, practice has begun for the Warriors fall sports teams. last season and is not currently practicing with the squad, according to Coach Elliot Hurtig.

When asked whether the decision was made by Norris or school officials, Hurtig had no comment.

In addition to school rules applying to all students, Norris’s ability to participate in interscholastic sports is also governed by a specific code of conduct applicable to athletes and others involved in extracurricular activities.

According to District 113 Board of Education policy, actions that would be a violation of state or federal law whether committed through a school activity or not can subject an athlete to discipline.

At this time, Mahoney and Norris remain free after each posted the cash portion of their $150,000 bonds. They are scheduled to appear in court in September.
