Who Is Stopping at Deerfield Stop Signs?

Is a rolling stop really a stop?

What must a driver do when coming to a stop sign to obey the law?

Last week Patch asked readers on its Facebook page to let us know which corners in Deerfield had the most scofflaws so today we spent 15 minutes with a video camera at the corner of Longfellow and Hermitage.

During that span, plenty of vehicles and one bicycle had to deal with one of the four stop signs at the intersection.

How many came to a full stop? How many made what many call a rolling stop—slowing down, even to a crawl, but not actually stopping. As far as the Deerfield Police Department is concerned, slowing but not stopping could get a driver a ticket.

“The Illinois Vehicle code is clear,” a police spokesperson said. “There must be a clear cessation of vehicular movement.”
