Belsky Denies Candidacy for House Seat

Former Highland Park mayor said his name was used in a poll without his knowledge or permission.

strongly denied today he is a candidate for the Republican nomination to succeed retiring left vacant this week

Belsky’s name was one of eight mentioned in a telephonic poll conducted Thursday night seeking public opinion on a preference for Turelli’s replacement, according to Moraine Township Republican Chairman Lou Atsaves.

“My name was used without my knowledge or permission,” Belsky said. “I have always been a registered Democrat. I am supporting Scott Drury.” Drury is the Democratic candidate for the seat.

Two people who were listed on the poll have already been mentioned as possible replacements to Turelli. They are Mark Neerhof and Mark Shaw, both of Lake Forest. Neerhof lost a close race to Turelli in the March 20 primary and Shaw is the West Deerfield Township Republican chairman.

The other names mentioned were current Lake County Board candidate and former Lake Forest Mayor Mike Rummel, Scott Helton of Lake Forest, Rick Lesser of Lake Bluff, Louise Hayes of Lake Bluff and Keith Gray. Hayes, Helton and Lesser all lost primary contests for other offices.

Belsky’s name came as a surprise to a number of Republicans as well as the former Highland Park mayor. “We were all wondering why his name was there,” Atsaves said about the discussion at Thursday’s Moraine Township Republican event.

Belsky is not only supporting Drury, but has been helping him with his campaign. “I spent three hours with him (Drury) helping him with policy,” Belsky said.

Turelli’s successor will be chosen by Lake County Republican Chairman Robert Cook, New Trier Township Comitteeman Bill Cadigan and Northfield Township Committeewoman Jill Brickman.

Good for Drury! Except for the part about Belsky helping him. Why would anyone want a former Mayor who left HP in shambles and fed the public lies about our safety and our money to help him with policy? Amazing that he found time to help Drury. That 3 hours he spent with him was 3 hours he did not have time to make up things to say as himself and others on the Patch. That helping Drury thing is probably not true anyway. Again, go get 'em Scott Drury!

I'm glad to hear that Mike clarified at he's not indeed running, because I know EVERYONE was wondering.... ....seriously? Why would someone who screwed up Highland Park so much think that people would actually look at him as a viable candidate for State Rep. It's not like the State of Illinois is in trouble or anything. And as Sheila mentioned, it was so kind of Mike to offer 3 hours of his very valuable time. I only hope that if I ever run for office Mike would consider lending some of his expertise on how not to run a government.

Wow, I guess Marvin and Sheila are living in some other Highland Park. Must be on the other side of the tracks...the one our newly elected Mayor is heading for. Highland Park developed into a great community under Mayor Belsky's leadership. I worry about the sustainability with the current leadership.

Howie Amuck is a REAL original alias. Like Seymour Butts or something. What do you worry about the sustainability? Tell me how you worry about the sustainability? I worry about the sustainability of owning movie theaters and country clubs, as our previous mayor got us into the quagmire of.
