Deerfield Imposes Sprinkling Restrictions

Lawn watering restricted to every other day.

Deerfield residents must limit their lawn watering to every other day through Sept. 15 because of an agreement with the Village’s supplier, Highland Park, according to .

People with even numbered addresses can water their lawn on even numbered days between 6 p.m. and midnight or from midnight until noon. There is no sprinkling allowed between noon and 6 p.m. Residents with odd addresses can do the same on the odd numbered days of the month.

“This does not apply to hand watering,” Street said referring to people who hold hoses to sprinkle their gardens. “My recommendation is to do it between 8 p.m. and midnight because there will be less evaporation from the sun.”

Deerfield, like some other communities with no access to Lake Michigan, buys it water from Highland Park. There is an agreement about restricting lawn watering. “It’s done so we don’t put too much of a burden on the water supply system,” Street said.

It's interesting that our friends in Highland Park have not had any restrictions until temporary ones implemented June 15th. This article is written like its something unusual that Deerfield has these restrictions. Deerfield has these restrictions for years. It's Highland Park that has suddenly started conserving water. Highland Park should conserve water every year, just like the rest of us.

To Kent Street Judie says hand watering in the evening causes mildew. It is better to hand water in the morning. Ed

Unfortunately, those with the resources get to make the rules. They have the water, we don't. We should be happy they don't try to price gauge us.

Does the even/odd restriction really save water? Are there that many people really watering their lawn *every* day? Unless you water every day this is like the 70's rule - odd plates buy on odd days and even plates buy on even days. That didnt conserve any gas; it just changed the day you waited in line.
