Food Pantries Gear Up for Holidays

Townships in Highland Park, Deerfield, and Lake Forest and beyond help feed those less fortunate.

A variety of opportunities are available for clients of as Thanksgiving approaches Thursday.

People who usually go to the West Deerfield Township Food Pantry will find a pumpkin pie and other “seasonal favorites,” in their bags, according to West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison.

“The people in Deerfield and West Deerfield Township are extremely generous,” Morrison said. “It is a wonderful time between now and Christmas. Those who have less are able to rely on the generosity.” The Pantry feeds those in need all year.

In Moraine Township, there is more emphasis on Christmas than Thanksgiving, according to Moraine Township Supervisor Mari Barnes. People will find normal food and sundries in their bags when they arrive today between 9 and 11 a.m. and 1 and 3:30 p.m.

“We try to help people with the holidays that are important to them,” Barnes said. In Moraine Township, that means Christmas. Gift cards will be given to those who arrive as well as the usual food items for Christmas.

Shields Township has already provided 100 complete Thanksgiving dinners to its users which were donated last week. “That includes 12 to 14-pound turkeys,” Shields Township Supervisor Gale Strengerwayne said. “People give very generously for the holidays.”

Shields Township includes all of Lake Bluff and Great Lakes as well as parts of Lake Forest and North Chicago. Moraine Township encompasses most of Highland Park, all of Highwood and southeastern Lake Forest. West Deerfield Township takes in all of Deerfield and as well as parts of Highland Park, Lake Forest and Riverwoods.
