gave the first update on his health in more than two months Friday thanking Dr. George Hornby and the team at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago for his improved mobility in that time.
Kirk has been involved in a trial program at the institute aimed at speeding the recovery of stroke victims. In the last nine weeks, he has been involved in rigorous walking and other exercises.
“I walked an average of 3,677 steps per day, a total of 14.79 miles over ground and on the treadmill and up 145 flights of stairs,” Kirk said in a statement. “As I move into a new phase of outpatient rehabilitation for occupational and physical therapy, I will continue to work hard in order to further regain my strength.”
Kirk has been engaged with his staff and colleagues over the last few months pushing issues despite his absence from the Senate and inability to cast votes. Thursday he met with Rep. Judy Biggert (R-Hinsdale) at his home, according to a release from his office.
In the last few months Kirk has pushed for tougher sanctions on Iran, according to a CNN report. He also introduced a bill to alter the definition of a Palestinian refugee, according to The Hill. Despite the effort, he recognizes the hard work remaining before he returns to full time duties in the Senate.
“Every day is a challenge but I am committed to providing you with updates on my rehabilitation and my work on behalf of Illinois in the United States Senate,” Kirk said in the statement. “Thank you to all who continue to send their prayers and messages of support, I am honored to serve and look forward to returning as soon as possible."
