New Garbage Man Headed to Town

Deerfield dumps longtime trash hauler as it switches to new company to maintain low rates.

Come April, residents will have to alter their garbage routines.

After 10 years of service in Deerfield, village trustees voted to dump Veolia for a  trash disposal company with lower rates. But the switch to Waste Management comes with some changes.

According to Jennifer Maltas, assistant to the village manager, starting in April, residents will have a once a week curbside collection. They will also have an optional once a week back-door service that costs an extra $6 a month.

That’s in departure from Deerfield’s current once or twice a week back-door pickup. It means, along with recycling and yard waste, all garbage must be placed at the curb unless residents subscribe for the back-door service directly with Waste Management.

“Everyone will have to get new recycling and garbage containers,” Maltas added, explaining that Waste Management operates on an automated service, which is why its prices were lower than three other companies that bided for the contract.

“It’s been 10 years since residents had their garbage disposal rates increased,” Maltas said. “With the new contract, we won’t have to increase rates. We’ll be able to maintain our current garbage rate for a longer time.”
