Public Silent on Proposed Village Tax Hike

Deerfield Board of Trustees holds hearing on tax levy and no one from the public speaks. Budget approved for 2014.

No member of the public spoke at a hearing on the proposed three percent increase in the real estate tax levy today at a meeting of the Village Board of Trustees with a final vote scheduled next month.

After deducting $1,372,157 from the original mount for debt service unrelated to the Water Reclamation Facility, the total Village levy will be $5,254,471, according to Village Finance Director Eric Burk. Just before discussing the levy, the Board unanimously passed the 2014 budget in the approximate amount of $40 million.

“The budget process is one of the major tasks of government. We are a service organization and our services are delivered by people,” Mayor Harriet Rosenthal said. “We recognize this is real money but we have to keep up with infrastructure and other services,” she added referring to the additional taxes.

The increase of the property tax levy means the owner of a $500,000 home will pay $677 for the Village’s portion of the real estate taxes after putting out $657 this year, according to Burk.

The Board also approved reports from the Plan Commission recommending special use permits for two new organizations. A Hadassah House resale shop and Beauty Systems Group hope to open at 405 Lake Cook Road. Patch will have more on those items in the near future.
