Are you an incumbent?

No, but a member of planning commission since 2010 and endorsed by the Caucus Nominating Committee for trustee.

How long have you served in your office?

Two and a half years.

What political accomplishments are you most proud of?

My lead role as a plan commissioner on establishing the guidelines to rezone the commercial areas at Lake Cook and Waukegan Roads which makes it easier for new retailers to enter our Village and more difficult for non-retail, non-sales tax paying users to occupy first floor space in this district.

What professional accomplishments are you most proud of?

I have been fortunate to have a long and successful real estate career focusing solely on shopping centers. Holding senior level positions throughout my career, there are numerous accomplishments.

I have leased, developed, redeveloped, sold and acquired deals that in the aggregate would exceed several billion in value. A few of the rewarding projects have been local in the areas like Calumet City and Matteson where I redeveloped vacant Kmart buildings into successful retail projects generating jobs and revenue for the communities. Turning around a blighted project into an active successful shopping center is a ‘cool’ thing to do.

What are the three most important issues facing the Deerfield Village Board?

  1. The most important issue is the retail vacancy rate of 25%, two and half times the average for Chicagoland. This vacancy represents approximately $2 million a year in lost revenue. Solving this problem and capturing retail sales tax needs to be our number one priority. A strong, economic base will allow for us to continue to deliver quality services, police protection and fund required infrastructure improvements.
  2. The number two priority is repairing and replacing our aging infrastructure, our roads, sidewalks, utilities and our public spaces. This is addressed by proper available fiscal planning, execution by dedicated personnel and available capital to fund the projects.
  3. The third priority is to foster a greater sense of pride in Deerfield and to energize our residents to become more involved with the community. To solicit the expertise our residents, to increase the amount of volunteers and to build the best community possible. Create a Village with strong leadership, first class services, superior education and a strong economic base to meet the needs of the future.

How do you distinguish yourself from your opponents?

I am a successful businessman, current on today’s issues and uniquely qualified to tackle the number one challenge we face, namely the need to redevelop and revitalize Deerbrook Mall and Cadwell’s Corner. I am the only candidate running with a specific platform focused directly on producing revenue. Revenue needed to continue providing the services we want. Revenue needed to keep our property taxes from increasing. Revenue needed to move our village forward.

What is your professional background?

Thirty-three years in the shopping center industry.
1998-present – Regional President – Kimco Realty Corporation
1994-1998 – Senior Vice President – LaSalle Partners
1981-1994 – Executive Vice President, Leasing – JMB Realty Corporation
Managing Director – JMB Institutional Realty

What is your educational background?

University of Denver, BSBA Marketing 1980, Cum Laude, 4.0 GPA Marketing.

What other information would you like to share?

Please consider your vote carefully. I’m confident I can make a difference, bring fresh energy to the Board and help move Deerfield in the right direction. I’d appreciate the opportunity to serve. Thank you.
