Village To Study Medical Marijuana Zoning

Mayor Rosenthal wants Deerfield to be prepared should someone want to open a dispensary in the Village.

With legislation allowing medical marijuana in Illinois sitting on Gov. Patrick Quinn’s desk awaiting a signature, Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal wants to be prepared should someone want to open a dispensary in the Village.

Rosenthal told the Village Board of Trustees at Monday’s meeting she wanted the issue of medical marijuana referred to the Plan Commission for further study. “There will be one in each state senatorial district,” she said. “I want the Plan Commission to study it.”

Though the legislation has been passed, it is not yet law. Nevertheless, Rosenthal wants to be prepared should a person or company wish to set up shop in the Village.

“We have to know what the zoning will be,” Rosenthal said. “How far must it be from a school, a park or a church? We have to be prepared,” she added so the Village can act properly should a potential operator seek an application.

Rosenthal is opposed to concept of medical marijuana as is Deerfield Police Chief John Sliozis, who wrote a letter to the editor last month.
