Brottman, Powell Advance to State Swim Finals

Deerfield High School swimmers will compete for medals at Evanston Saturday.

Barbara Brottman and Ruby Powell advanced through the preliminary round of the Illinois High School Association State Swim Meet today for Deerfield High School to advance to the finals at 1 p.m. Saturday in Evanston.

Brottman is guaranteed two medals and Powell one. Brottman will swim for seventh place in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events. In today’s preliminary round, she was ninth among all participants in the 500 in 5:01.08 and 12th in the 200 with a 1:52.6 clocking.

Powell swam to a 57.29 performance in the 100 backstroke to reach the finals and an opportunity for a seventh place medal. Her time was 12th best. In the 100 freestyle she recorded a time of 53:62 in the preliminaries and will not swim that race Saturday.

Diver Christine Stitcher compiled 172.2 points in today’s preliminary round to finish 17th among the State’s elite. She did not advance to the finals Saturday.

The 200 medley relay team of Powell, Marcy Kreda, Becca Rosenberg and Mallory Lynn completed the course in 1:53.06 in 39th place.
