Choose Deerfield’s Athlete of the Year

With Warriors winning Patch athlete of the week honors for the northern suburbs two of the last three weeks, it is time for Deerfield Patch readers to pick the athlete of the year.

After athletes from earned over competitors from other north suburban high schools , it is time for readers to nominate and select the athlete of the year for 2011. 

became the second winner Sunday after leading the Warriors to a victory over state powerhouse Glenbrook North Dec. 9. Illinois state diving champion won three weeks ago. 

Though this reader based poll is not scientific, it shows when an athlete from Deerfield is nominated the community shows its support of the youth. Now it is time to choose Patch’s Deerfield athlete of the year.

Patch will not be nominating any of the contenders nor choosing the winner. All that will be done by the readers. Make your nomination in the comments section to this story before midnight Dec. 24. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. 

The five people receiving the highest number of nominations will become finalists. The story with the reader’s ballot to select the athlete of the year will appear Dec. 26. Then it will be the readers’ turn to vote for the winner. The results will be published Jan. 2.

There have been some memorable moments in Deerfield sports this year besides the accomplishments of Purdy and Alfieri. The . competed in the State Meet in both gymnastics and swimming.

 was second in Illinois in the shot put and third in discus. was third in the triple jump. The and three wrestlers —,  and —went to the State Meet. There were plenty of other outstanding performances. 

Was there a strong athletic performance this year by someone other than a Warrior? Feel free to consider outstanding accomplishments by adults, junior high athletes or others. 

Choose from these and any of the ones we did not mention. The most votes for the top five athletes secures a nomination on the final ballot.
