D109 Settles with Fired Teacher

Deerfield School District 109 will pay fired special education teacher $65,000 in a settlement, reports the Chicago Tribune.

A Caruso Middle School special education teacher dismissed by the District 109 School Board last November after missing more than two years of work has received a $65,000 settlement, reports the Chicago Tribune.

Stephanie Horwitz, a tenured teacher hired in 2001, stopped coming to work in Sept. 2011, which resulted in the district placing her on unpaid leave and finally, terminating her employment, according to the Tribune.

Horwitz, who claimed she had a medical disability and the district was unwilling to provide reasonable accommodations, filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Parents of Horwitz’s students praised her efforts with their children, though some hinted foul circumstances resulted in disciplinary action, reported Patch in Dec. 2012.
