D109 Wants More Girls in Gifted Math Classes

The current gender disparity was discussed at the most recent board meeting.

District 109 is going to start math clubs for girls in kindergarten through second grade in an effort to draw more girls into the gifted math program offered for third through eighth graders, according to an article in the Deerfield Review.

The difference in boys and girls in those classes is three to one in some schools and two to one in others, the board was told, according to the Review article. There is a gender gap in gifted math programs at other nearby elementary districts, but it is not as big as Deerfield’s. There is more parity in the D109 gifted language arts programs.
