Deerfield High School Wrestlers to Compete at Lake Zurich Saturday

Deerfield will take on Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Cary-Grove, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Lake Zurich, Palatine and Stevenson.

The Deerfield High School wrestling team will compete in an important meet at Lake Zurich on Saturday, Feb. 2. The top three individuals will advance into sectionals at Barrington next weekend.

The team champion moves on to face the winner of the Grant Sectional with the winner going to the team State Finals, according to Deerfield Coach Marc Pechter.

Deerfield High School will face off against Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Cary-Grove, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Lake Zurich, Palatine and Stevenson. The Warriors are currently ranked 18th in the State, according to Illinois Matmen, followed by Barrington at 19 and Cary Grove at 20.

Wrestlers to watch for Deerfield include Andrew Mehrholz (ranked 7th in the strate in the 106 weight class), Jordan Lieberman, Jeff Spinello, Brian Spinello, Jim Kirby, JJ Nawrot, Chase Hanusa and Ari Sapinsley.

The Daily Herald says to "Expect a spirited, edgy race to the end from Barrington, Cary-Grove and Deerfield, which all met during the regular season but decided little, except to know just how close they are to one other and how tight the team race will be at this regional."

The state individual tournament will be held Feb. 14-16 in Champaign, while the dual-team state tournament is scheduled for Feb. 23 in Bloomington. 

The Feb. 2 meet starts at 9 a.m.
