DHS Ranked 6th Best IL High School

The U.S. News and World Report list puts Deerfield High School ahead of all other suburban schools except one.

U.S. News and World Report has named Deerfield High School the 6th best high school in the state in its 2014 ranking, which was released this week.

That puts it ahead of all other suburban schools except for Adlai E. Stevenson in Lincolnshire, which came in at No. 5. The top four schools are all Chicago selective enrollment high schools. You can view the full list here.

Nationally, DHS was ranked No. 217.

The methodology, which was unchanged since last year, looks at three main factors to decide a school’s ranking: whether students are performing better than statistically expected for the average student in the state; whether disadvantaged students are performing better in math and reading than the state average for their peers; and the school’s “college-readiness” performance, based on AP or International Baccalaureate test data.

In Illinois, the Prairie State Achievement Examination is used to gauge student performance to determine the ranking.

The only other North Shore school to make it into the top 10 is Highland Park High School, which landed in the No. 10 spot. Local schools dominated the next 10 spots, with New Trier ranked No. 15, Glenbrook North No. 16, Vernon Hills No. 17, Buffalo Grove No. 18 and Glenbrook South No. 20.

Earlier this month, DHS was listed by the Washington Post as the 35th most challenging high school in Illinois.
