DHS Students Clean Up for a Day

Earthworks members clean up Glencoe Beach a part of Adopt-A-Beach program.

A group of 27 young people from Earthworks, an organization of Deerfield High School students, went to the beach Sept. 15 in Glencoe but it was not for fun and games, according to a news release from Township High School District 113.

The students were there to clean up the Glencoe Beach as part of the Adopt-A-Beach program sponsored by the Alliance for the Great Lakes. They did more than clean as they collected water samples and other data for scientific purposes. The information goes to the Alliance for further study.

Not only do the students from Earthworks clean up the Glencoe Beach twice a year, they demonstrate their passion for the environment by collecting recyclables throughout the school and increasing awareness including America’s Recycle Day in November and Earth Day in April.

In addition to adopting the Glencoe Beach, the group collects trash twice a year along Half Day Road as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program.
