Disparity Seen in Deerfield Middle Schools' Special Ed Success

Students on IEPs at Caruso fared better than those at Shepard.

At Caruso Middle School, 98 percent of students on individual education plans (IEPs) met District 109’s internal achievement goals, while at Shepard, 78 percent did, according to an article in the Deerfield Review.

Several possible explanations for the disparity were offered at the board meeting earlier this month where the numbers were presented, according to the article. They included higher staff turnover at Shepard, a possibility that the goals were set too low at Caruso, and the fact that the strict percentages don’t reflect the full picture of student achievements.
