Update: District 113 Superintendent Meeting Postponed

(Update) The meeting tonight with Township High School District 113 Superintendent George Fornero and Highland Park District 112 leader David Behlow has been postponed to an unknown future date, according to the League of Women Voters of Highland Park/Highwood.

The reason given for the postponment is the Wednesday strike date set by the Highland Park elementary school teachers.

(Earlier at 5:30 a.m.) Township High School District 113 Superintendent George Fornero will take your questions at a public forum at 7:30 p.m. today at the Heller Nature Center in Highland Park.

The event is organized by the Highland Park League of Women Voters. Fornero will be joined by Highland Park School District 112 Superintendent David Behlow. That district is facing a possible teachers’ strike Tuesday.

The superintendents will speak about the two districts' long-range vision and then take questions from the public, according to League President Barbara Lippai.

"We had this planned quite a while ago, even before they (District 112 teachers) put out their intent to go out on strike," Lippai said. “We have our ear to the ground."

The league recently began gathering information from District 112 to get a better understanding of the district's finances. Though this forum is part of that information gathering process, it is also designed to give residents a better understanding of how their schools operate.

"Our goal is not just to study for the sake of study," Lippai said, "but to educate the public."

The forum is one of several events the League of Women Voters has planned for the political season. Candidate debates for upcoming elections will be held on Oct. 14 and 21 as well. The League also recently published its Voters' Guide, which has information on every candidate running for office in the Nov. 6 election.

"Part of our mission is to encourage active participation in government, and what is more active than voting," Lippai said.
