Gallery: DHS School Chest Gets Off to Fast Start

More than $10,000 raised from 5K run. Dinner termed big success. Next event is Thursday.

After an inspirational assembly Thursday, Deerfield High School students and the entire community got behind the School Chest drive raising money to benefit LUNGevity, an organization with Deerfield roots which fights lung cancer.

Several hundred runners took part in a 5K race Saturday from Adam Field through the Prairie Wolf Slough and back netting more than $10,000, according to faculty sponsor Ryan Rockaitis.

The next major was a dinner attended by more than 300 people Sunday at the Hyatt Deerfield run by students and attended by members of the community. Student officials are still tallying the proceeds, according to Rockaitis.

Deerfield Idol is the next major fundraising event at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium where students and others will vote with their loose change for the best singer. All proceeds go to LUNGevity.
