Kelsey Wins State Golf Title

DHS junior’s one-under par 71 earns crown as rain washes out second round.

Ian Kelsey became Deerfield’s fourth state champion in less than a year today when the Deerfield High School junior shared the 2012 Illinois golf crown with Jack Junge in a rain shortened tournament in Bloomington.

Kelsey shot a one-under par 71 Friday in a round that included five birdies, four bogies and nine pars. He was ready to start his final round at 9 a.m. today.

After a shotgun start where he had not yet recorded a score, Kelsey was crowned co state champion with Junge when Illinois High School Association tournament officials canceled the second day of competition because of weather conditions, according to Assistant Coach Chris Oldeen.

In yesterday’s round, Kelsey made par on the first three holes before a birdie two on the par-three fourth gave him a lead he held until Junge birdied his final hole to move into a tie.

In November, Erin Purdy took the state diving title followed by the Warrior hockey team in the winter. In May, Jason Brown won the state tennis championship.
