New 109 Superintendent Makes First Report to Board

Budget will show ninth straight surplus and air conditioning project for three schools is on schedule.

Michael Lubelfeld, the new superintendent of Deerfield Public Schools District 109, kicked off today's Board of Education meeting with his first report to the Board.

Lubelfeld, a Deerfield resident, talked about, among other things, his meetings with members of the Deerfield Education Association teachers' union since he began his new job July 1.

Patch will have a more detailed story on Lubelfeld's first few weeks as well as his report later this week. That article will include comments on meetings with teachers from union President Dennis Jensen.

In other business, new air conditioning for Shepard Middle School and as well as South Park and Wilmot Elementary Schools will be complete before the fall term begins, according to Director of Buildings and Grounds Steve Kenesie.

The air quality work is currently on budget. Walden and Kipling Elementary Schools as well as the portion of Caruso Middle School not currently air conditioned will be done next summer.

A preliminary presentation on the 2013-2014 budget was also made indicating the District will have approximately $200,000 remaining after spending $48.7 million.

"I am happy to report this is the ninth consecutive year of surpluses after 13 years of deficits," Assistant Business Manager Mary Kay Pawlak said. Approximately 95 percent of the revenue came from property taxes.

Patch will have a more detailed report on these issues and other matters discussed later this week.
