New Trier Wins State Swim Title

Smoliga, Stoehr and Purdy win individual crowns.

Area’s Star Performers:       Olivia Smoliga of Glenbrook South repeated as state champion in the 50-yard freestyle in state record time of 22.55 and took the 100 freestyle setting a state standard of 48.88 in Friday’s preliminaries. Rachael Stoehr of Lake Forest also had double titles in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle while of Deerfield was the champion diver.

Other Notable Area Performances:            Stephanie Marchuk of New Trier was second in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle while the Trevians were runner up in both the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. They added a third place in the 200 freestyle relay. New Trier’s Samantha James (100 freestyle) and Jessica Sutherland (100 backstroke) also added second place finishes. Evan Swenson of Loyola Academy grabbed the No. 2 spot in the 50 freestyle while Glenbrook South did the same in the 200 freestyle relay and added third in the 200 medley relay. Michelle Garland of Loyola Academy captured third in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley while the Ramblers were third in the 400 freestyle relay. Julie Corboy of North Shore Country Day School was the third place diver. 

The Bottom Line:      New Trier did not win a single relay nor did a Trevian take a state title but the team’s depth was the key to repeating as state champions.
