Shepard Students Paint Principal Green for Earth Day

Sixth graders win composting contest.

The day after Earth Day was a very green day at .

All last week students have been engaged in their Earth Day project by putting food scraps from lunch into specially designated bins for each grade to be retrieved by Organics on the Move and composted.

The competition among the sixth, seventh and eighth graders had a special prize. The group which is able to compost the greatest amount of food by weight gets to paint green.

On Monday, the winning sixth graders had their chance to cover their principal with green paint. As a bonus, Assistant Principal Brian Bullis was shellacked with green as well.

“Over the past five years, Shepard Middle School has made a staunch commitment to “green” practices,” Shapiro said. “This year, the Student Council has been engaged in trying to turn Shepard even greener. We are starting our third week of composting during lunch periods and have already saved close to 400 pounds of food items from the landfill.”
