Sports Digest: Bowler Tometz Reaches State; Swimmers Place Second

Warriors’ Star Performer:               Anthony Tometz finished third in the Vernon Hills Sectional.

Who’s Next:   Tometz will be the sole Warrior competing in the State Meet Friday and Saturday in O’Fallon.

The Bottom Line:      Tometz compiled 1,278 points to place third and advance to the State Meet. 

Swimming 

The Final Score:  1. Conant 366, 2. Deerfield 309.5, 3. Hersey 299, 4. D300 253, 5. Wheeling 226.5, 6. St. Viator 225. 

Warriors’ Star Performers:             The frosh/soph 200-yard medley relay team of Ryan Smith, Evan Fischoff, Patrick Abrahams and Bobby Crane finished first (1:50.59) while Smith, Crane, Fischoff and Kellen Scanlan teamed to win the 400 frosh/soph freestyle relay (3:41.18). Ryan Church was the diving champion with 375.3 points. Double placers for Deerfield were Joey Barr with a third in the 500 freestyle (5:13.48) and sixth in the 200 (1:00.91), Daniel Perlovsky in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.22) and sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:14.41) and Alex Howard with a fifth in the 100 freestyle (52.91) and sixth in the 50 freestyle (24.12).

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Barr, Howard, Alec Barry and Danny Booker joined to take third in the 400 varsity freestyle relay (3:31.30) while Barr, Barry, Booker and Nate Block did the same in the 200 varsity freestyle relay (1:37.75). The 200 frosh/soph freestyle quartet of Abrahams, Crane, Scanlan and Zachary Molina placed third as well (1:43.41). Heath Ogwa was third in diving (328.5), Abrahams took fifth in the 100 butterfly (59.95) with Block sixth (1:01.08). Smith ended fifth in the 100 backstroke (59.54) while Evan Horwitz equaled that in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.48). 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors entertain Maine East at 5 p.m. Thursday. 

The Bottom Line:      With underclass relays counting in the overall score, the youngsters helped make a difference in Deerfield’s second place finish.
