Sports Digest: DHS Girls Crunch Niles North in Hoops

Warrior wrestlers dominate Highland Park, divers win own relays while swimmers finish fifth.

The Final Score:        Deerfield 65, Niles North 43

Warriors Star Performer:    Margot Sylvan scored 18 stole the ball four times, dished out a pair of assists and had a rebound.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Haley Greer added 13 points, four assists, three steals and three rebounds. Kathryn Hoffman chipped in 10 tallies, three rebounds as well as a pair of assists and steals. Sarah Ginn contributed seven points, hauled down six rebounds and stole the ball four times.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors entertain Maine West at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. 

The Bottom Line:      The freshman duo of Sylvan and Greer continue to lead Deerfield. The Warriors turned a three-point halftime edge into a rout holding Niles North to nine points in the second half while scoring 27 points of their own. Deerfield jumped on the Vikings for a 17-11 lead at the end of the first period. 

Wrestling 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 63, Highland Park 9 

Warriors Star Performer:    Winners for Deerfield were Andrew Mehrholz, Joey Bloom, Brian Spinello, Jeff Spinello, Brady Glantz, Ari Sapinsley, Tom Bonadies, Colton Emmerich, Chase Hanusa, Jim Kirby, Patrick Johnson and
JJ Nawrot.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors compete in the Fenton Invitational at 9 a.m. today. 

The Bottom Line:      With eight forfeit victories because the Giants were unable to field wrestlers, Deerfield secured the meet on the on Bloom’s pin in the first match. 

Swimming 

The Final Score(Diving) 1. Deerfield 484.25, 2. Warren 372.44, Maine South 372.55, 4. Glenbrook South 359.5, 5. St. Ignatius 176.45. (Swimming) 1. Warren 44.5, 2. Glenbrook South 44, 3. Normal West 40, 4. St. Ignatius 32, 5. Deerfield 30, 6. Maine South 27.5. 

Warriors’ Star Performers:             The divers gained the only first place for Deerfield.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       The 200-yard medley frosh/soph/varsity relay team placed second in 1:50.45 while 500 freestyle relay team took third in 4:39.55. 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Glenbrook North at 10 a.m. Dec. 8.
