Sports Digest: DHS Gymnasts, Wrestlers Win

Deerfield High School wrestling team dominates Maine West; gymnasts edge Glenbrook North on last event.

The Final Score:        Deerfield 133.15, Glenbrook North 133

Warriors Star Performers:  Christine Stitcher took the all around competition averaging 9.213 points for the four events. She also won on the uneven parallel bars (9.25) and the balance beam (9.0) along with second place finishes on floor exercise (9.3) and vault (9.3). 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Ally Perbohner took second on the bars (8.45).

Who’s Next:   The Warriors compete in the Lake County Meet at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mundelein. 

The Bottom Line:      In Coach Carol Myers final home meet capping a 34-year career, Stitcher’s floor performance in the last event sealed a narrow win for the Warriors. Deerfield is 6-0 in dual meet competition.

Wrestling 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 51, Maine West 6

Warriors Star Performers:  JJ Nawrot (Heavyweight), Andrew Mehrholz (106) and Chase Hanusa (182) pinned their opponent while both Colton Emmerich (170 and Jim Kirby (195) ended their matches early by technical fall. It took Mehrholz only 19 seconds. 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Winning by decision were Jordan Lieberman (113), Brian Spinello (126), Jeff Spinello (132), Brady Glantz (138), Brian McCann (145) and Ari Sapinsley (160).

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Maine East at 6 p.m. today and compete in a Quadrangular meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at Stevenson High School. 

The Bottom Line:  Deerfield clinched at least a tie for its fifth straight Central Suburban League North Division crown while running its dual meet record to 20-2. A win against Maine East today will assure the Warriors of sole possession of the title.
